The Gunners have stepped up the hunt for a centre back after Gabriel was ruled out for eight weeks with an ankle injury that he picked up in the pre-season match against Manchester City.
Wenger is already struggling for defensive options with Per Mertesacker already on the side-lines through injury and Laurent Koscielny only returning to training this week following his Euro campaign this summer.
There have been reports that Wenger is trying to bring in a new defender before the Liverpool game, with the Daily Mail claiming that the Gunners are set to make a £30m bid for Shkodran Mustafi.
The release clause for the 24 year old is still £42m; however reports have suggested that Valencia will accept £25m for the German. This means that the £30m bid should be enough for the player and that the Spanish club will let him go.
