The 32 year old hasn’t had any first team football this season after undergoing surgery in August on damaged knee ligaments. With Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi Wenger’s first choice pairing and Gabriel and Rob Holding on the books, it seems unlikely that the German will get any playing time in the remainder of the season.
The captain’s current contract ends at the end of the season and it looks as if he does leave, it will be to prove to the Gunners that he deserves a new contract.
The Times article however claims that the player wouldn’t be allowed to join another Premier League club, and that if any deal were to happen it wouldn’t take place until the closing days of the transfer window.
The BFG’ has made 149 appearances for Arsenal and even managed to bag five goals in the process, since joining from German side Werder Bremen in 2011.
