Antonio Conte is in talks with Chelsea over a new contract which will take him beyond 2019. The report has stated that transfers have been discussed as part of the contract, with one of the players he wants to bring in being Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean has been at the club for three years but has become disgruntled at the club’s lack of progress. With the club unable to compete for the league again and looking at a hard F.A Cup draw against Manchester City, it looks unlikely that the Gunners will see silverware this season.
The 28-year-olds contract expires in 15 months, and discussions have stalled as the player is asking for a pay rise to £250,000, but is currently on £130,000. However, this seems a realistic ask with there being a list of clubs lining up to try and sign the player, including Chelsea! The list includes Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Inter Milan, all of which will be able to meet the player’s wage demands easily.
It’s hard to see Wenger selling Alexis to such a rival as Chelsea if he takes the club seriously as contenders in the Premier League. However, we said the same for Van Persie, Nasri and Adebayor, all of which were sold to domestic rivals and all of which went on to have success.
It’s hard to see how Arsenal will bring in anyone in the summer of the same calibre or better than Sanchez, the same can be said for Mesut Ozil. With the club not growing in stature, but more likely decreasing, and also becoming less able to compete on the financial front.
However, both of their contract negations and futures are unlikely to be certain till they know who will be managing them next season. This should happen this week or next, with Wenger saying earlier in the month that he will let us know what his future holds in the international break.
