The Polish goalkeeper has been interviewed by BT Sport on his time at A.S Roma and whether he’d want to return to Arsenal full time. Wojciech went on loan to A.S Roma in the summer of 2015, due to a fallout with the management after a heavy defeat to Southampton and was subsequently dropped from the first team position.
Since then he’s managed to make 69 appearances so far in the two seasons he’s been on loan at the club. Though if he does return in the Summer, where exactly will he fit in? With Petr Cech our number one keeper, he can’t be expecting to get guaranteed game time. Also with the rumours that David Ospina will be leaving, I don’t think he will want to take up that position as number two
He had this to say about a return to the club:
“I’m happy here. I feel I’ve grown as a goalkeeper but for me the time to make a decision will come in the summer. For now I’m an Arsenal player, as soon as my loan finishes, I have to come back [to London]. I’ve always said I’d love to be back there. Like I said, what will happen definitely won’t be decided now but in a month or two months time.”
The argument could even be made that he should be warranted a shot at becoming the club’s number one again and that his performances at Roma this season are there to back it up. He’s managed 14 clean sheets in the Serie A league this season, which is the highest in the league. Also from looking at the stats per 90 minutes of their respective leagues, the on-loan keeper has managed more saves per goal, a better distribution accuracy and a better overall defensive score according to Squawka.
|Wojciech Szczesny||Petr Cech|
|Saves per goal||2.72||2.54|
So we’ll have to wait till the Summer to see where the 27-year-old ends up and whether he’ll play a part in next years campaign.
