With both teams not playing well recently, it looked like Arsenal could capitalize and turn things around. The line up was everything that Gooners could hope for, with Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette starting together for only the second time.
Arsenal certainly started the better of the two, with the best chance falling to the French forward, with the Everton keeper saving from only six yards out. However, only a few minutes later Wayne Rooney found the opening goal, using Mertesacker as a shield to block Cech’s view and put it past him.
Monreal equalised soon after when Sanchez’s shot was blocked by the keeper, followed by Xhaka’s, with Nacho Monreal finally burying the shot.
After the teams came back out for the second half the Gunners really looked on the front foot. With Alexis putting in a floating ball for Ozil to loop over the keeper, putting Arsenal 2-1 in front. Arsenal’s task certainly got a lot easier with Everton’s Idrissa Gueye earning a second yellow, which saw the Blues reduced to ten men.
Arsenal made it three in the 73rd minute, with the Gunners breaking into a counter-attack with Alexis and Ozil combining for Lacazette to put it past Pickford. Jack Wilshere came on for the Frenchmen, for his first Premier League appearance in a long time and looked impressive. Aaron Ramsey rubbed salt into the wounds when he put in Arsenal’s fourth close to the 90 minutes, slotting the ball to the side of the Everton keeper.
Although after a shambolic mistake from Nacho Monreal and Petr Cech, it saw the North West club bring another goal back to make it 4-2. It didn’t all end there with Alexis looking hungry for a goal he managed to get past four Everton players and slot it into the bottom corner for it to finish 5-2 to the away side.
