With Arsenal having already qualified for the next stages of the competition, it didn’t look like the game would contain much excitement, though that wasn’t the case.
The first half was end to end, with both teams having multiple opportunities to put their sides ahead. Giroud had the Gunners best chance in the first half, forcing the keeper to make a save after a brilliant ball from Willock. Red Star then managed to hit the bar, with the Arsenal keeper getting hands to a looping header to help it onto the woodwork.
Jack Wilshere appealed for a penalty halfway through the second half, but it didn’t look like there was too much in it, with the referee telling the player to get up. The Englishman then had his shot cleared off the line, with Maitland-Niles providing a lovely turn for Wilshere to try and finish it off.
Wenger then decided to change things with Willock coming off for Nketiah, who had impressed in the league cup only a few weeks earlier. The Gunners had the chance to break the deadlock with Giroud giving the ball to Elneny, who forwarded it onto Walcott who managed to completely miskick the ball within only yards of the goal.
