Southampton 1 – Arsenal 1: Player Ratings

After Arsenal’s midweek win in the Europea League, it was time to carry on that good form into the domestic competition, after the defeat to last weekend. Even though Arsenal started with a strong team bringing in several changes to the midweek game, the team started slow and found themselves 1-0 down within 2 minutes.

Per Mertesacker went to clear the ball but instead gave the ball straight to a Southampton player, with the German trying to make amends he instead slipped over. This allowed the player to give a floating ball directly into Charlie Austin’s path for him to slot it into the back of the net.

The Gunners had a  few chances before the halftime whistle but none of them were clear-cut. The manager decided to make a change bringing on Danny Welbeck in place of Mertesacker, going for a more attacking formation. With following him in place of Xhaka, as well as Oliver Giroud for Lacazette

However, none of this seemed to make any difference, with the Saints putting all their men behind the ball and time wasting at any given opportunity. Wenger’s side looked vulnerable to Southampton’s attack, with the Gunners putting men forward at every opportunity with the team in red and white getting some great chances late on.

With only three minutes of regular time to go, the manager’s substitutions seemed to pay off. With a lovely free kick from Alexis, the French striker found his head on the cross and put it into the bottom right of the net.

Though, the Gunners with only minutes left couldn’t find a winner. I think many of us will be thinking that was three points lost, instead of one gained…
