With both Ozil and Alexis surely on the way out, could Oxlade-Chamberlain also be leaving the Gunners this summer? The Telegraph have reported that Liverpool could be lining up to sign the Arsenal forward, with a deal of around £35m.
The Englishman is heading into his final 12 months on his contract along with Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Jack Wilshere, Wojciech Szczesny and Kieran Gibbs. Although most of the talk has been about the German and Chilean’s contract, there hasn’t been mentioned about Chamberlain’s.
The Telegraph have reported that Liverpool is lining up to try and sign the player, hoping that the club will be convinced to sell if they offer around the £35m mark. However, Wenger has repeatedly spoken about the player and his hope that he’ll stay:
“I personally think it’s vital that Chamberlain stays at Arsenal,” he said.
“We bought him when he was very young and built him up. He has a great mentality and a good football brain and it would be big damage for us to lose this kind of player.”
This talk of the player leaving the club isn’t new, with stories coming out a few months ago that the player was angry that he hadn’t already been offered a new contract. Supposedly he would reject any new contract on offer no matter what wages were offered.
With lots of first team players going into their last 12 months on their contract, it is certainly looking to be an interesting Summer. It would be a shame to lose the forward given the time he’s been at the club and at his current age 23, he is surely going into the peak of his career.
Arsenal are set to play Everton on Saturday at the Emirates, however they are most likely to be without Aaron Ramsey. The midfielder picked up a hamstring problem in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich, which Wenger blamed on fatigue from the Welshman’s international duty responsibilities.
With Ramsey out for the game it looks like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is most likely to fill in the right midfield role as he did in the Champions league after Ramsey left the field. The Arsenal manager is left with few options with both Jack Wilshere and Thomas Rosicky both injured and unlikely to return soon.
“He had a scan today but he’s out. I believe he will be out until after the next international break. With the [last] international break, the fact that he played against Andorra certainly cost Bale and him as well.”
With Ospina left out of the squad for the midweek Champions League game Wenger also spoke about his current situation:
“David Ospina is out for our next game and certainly until the next international break.”
The Arsenal manager has urged Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to start playing with more freedom in matches.
The 22 year old has made eight appearances this season, scoring Arsenal’s Community Shield winner against Chelsea in pre-season and is set to feature in tonight’s Capital One Cup third-round fixture at White Hart Lane.
This is what Wenger had to say about Chamberlain’s development:
“It is a massive season for Alex, he is at the age now where he is getting picked regularly for the national team. He is picked by me as well for the team.
“It is a very important season because of the nature he is growing. You feel the evolution has a sense of responsibility. I think Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain must believe more in himself.
“He must believe more in his talent and that will help him develop as a player. I think sometimes he is too critical of himself. I would like him to play with the freedom and express the desire of his talent.”
